Huge Fun at the Chicken BBQ

It was another great year at the Chicken BBQ kicking off the beginning of summer on Memorial Day and the opening of the Cross Plains Pool.  Volunteers and the Chamber Board served up almost 1000 chicken dinners and around 400 hot dogs!  The crowd enjoyed the music and games with DJ Erin Crowley of Musical Memories.  Kids got their faces painted, did fun crafts and bounced in Mickey's house from Fun Time Bounces.

The Chamber sends a most sincere Thank you for all the volunteer work and donations!!

Chamber Members and guests enjoyed networking and learning about the Cross Plains Area Volunteer Emergency Medical Service (EMS) Team

We enjoyed the opportunity to learn about the potentially life-saving technique known as cardio-cerebral resuscitation (CCR).

Chamber member Tom O’Connell from Marketing Concepts shares his presentation below:

I have been a member of the Cross Plains Business Association/Cross Plains Chamber for many years.  I have also been a volunteer EMT for twenty years, starting as a driver, getting my Basic EMT license, and later my EMT Intermediate license.  I have also served in the past as the Cross Plains Area EMS Association President for approximately 12 years.

I find the work on EMS to be very rewarding, helping neighbors, friends, business associates or complete strangers in their time of need.  As the area grows, so too do the need for EMTs and drivers, especially during the weekday shifts.  I am reaching out to other Chamber members, asking for your help in filling these additional needs.  This can come from a several fronts.
1.)  Volunteer to become an EMT or driver yourself.  As I said, it is very rewarding and provides a good knowledge base of medical information for whatever might come your way.
2.) Actively promote EMS to your employees.  Not simply give an OK if asked but encourage in staff meetings, sales meetings, or other company communications to take the training and volunteer for EMS.  Once these individuals become trained, allow for these individuals to be “on call” during the work week.  This would usually require only once per week with simply a chance to go out on an actual call.  Thus, an employee may only go on a run once or twice in any given month.

In addition to helping people in their time of need, if we do not get the volunteers needed, there would be significant costs to all citizens and businesses of Cross Plains.  It is estimated to provide a service that is 24/7, we would need a minimum of $500,000 annually just for manpower.  This does not include capital expenses.  Imagine if you will want this kind of annual budget would mean to your business in new taxes.
Thus, I strongly encourage the Chamber and each member of the Chamber to be pro-active in helping find and train new EMTs and drivers.  This will not only keep from raising taxes to fund EMS but allow more people to become trained in EMS and  help fellow employees, family members, and neighbors.

$500 Scholarships were awarded to Olivia Kuker & Megan Padrutt
The 2011 Cross Plains Area Chamber of Commerce (CPACC) Scholarships were awarded at the CPACC Chicken Barbeque on Memorial Day.  This is the eleventh year CPACC has awarded scholarships.  The scholarships were awarded in the amount of $500 each to two area students.
This year’s winners were Olivia Kuker and Megan Padrutt.  Megan will be graduating from Middleton High School and lives in Cross Plains.  Olivia will graduate from Mt Horeb High School and lives in Blue Mounds.  Both Olivia and her mom work in Cross Plains.  Both girls have earned academic honors and awards.
Olivia has taken several advanced placement courses to prepare for college.  She has been very involved and successful in volleyball, including volunteering as a instructor and mentor at camp.  She plans to attend Minnesota State Mankato to pursue a Doctor of Physical Therapy degree.
Megan has been very active at St Francis Xavier Church, serves on the youth board, helped as a teacher’s aid and worked at many other church functions.  Megan has also been very active and successful in volleyball.  She has plans to attend UW Eau Claire and is leaning toward a career in biology, possibly a sports physical therapist.
The applications were evaluated based on community service, student activities, scholastic achievements, work experience and future education/employment goals.  To be eligible for the scholarship, the applicant (or parent of the applicant) must live or work in the Village of Cross Plains, the Town of Cross Plains or the Town of Berry.  In addition, the applicant is expected to attend a technical school, college or university upon graduation.  Thank you to our judges; Kathy Esser, Annette Koenig & Amy Hansen.

Dane County groups can apply for matching grants for outdoor-recreation improvements
Dane County communities and non-profit organizations now have a crack at $1 million in matching county grants to improve outdoor recreation or natural resources.

Dane County Executive Kathleen Falk on Wednesday said the grants, up to $250,000 to any one project, are available under the Dane County Partners for Recreation and Conservation (PARC) program created in the 2011 county budget.

Falk said work to restore the Black Earth Creek in Cross Plains, improvements to Lake Marion in Mazomanie or Lake Belle View in Belleville and plans to expand the Reddan Soccer Complex in Verona are examples of projects that could be eligible for Dane County PARC funding.

27th Annual Hill and Valley Antique Auto and Americana Show

Once again the Hill and Valley Antique Auto and Americana Show took scores of visitors back in history to what now may be referred to as the “good old days”.
Inclement early morning rain certainly took a toll on the total possible participants.  But, by late morning the bright sun came out and people arrived in ever greater numbers.  It truly was a joyous event.
The word is now out that the “Cross Plains Show”, as car buffs refer to it, is not more of the same old things but a family show of considerable diversity.
It is felt that given our traditional great weather combined with an ever increasing sense of local pride, more volunteers and a great boost on the part of the Chamber of Commerce, this event will continue to attract visitors from all over.
We want to express our profound thanks to everyone who makes our event so enjoyable.

A Note of Thanks for Spike Rett’s Fundraiser from the Brunners

2010 Volleyball Champions.   Esser's Cross Plains Brewery
Standing L-R.  Justin Loomis, Brian Statz, Bobby Rogers, Tim Satterthwaite, Sitting L-R. Lisa Evans, Angel Ericksen, Jessica Brunner, Becky Frederick.

Thank You to all our family, friends, businesses and the community for supporting the 7th annual Spike Rett’s Fundraiser.  We held our event on August 6 at Main Street Lanes and on August 7 at Kurt’s on Main in Cross Plains.  We raised an incredible $22,500 for the International Rett Syndrome Foundation (IRSF).  All money raised will be used to fund research for a cure and support strategies for families living with Rett Syndrome.   We would like to express a huge thank you to all that attended, donated or helped support the event.

The volleyball tournament, silent auction, and raffle at Kurt’s were once again a fantastic success!  The weather was perfect and Kurt & Erica Schlicht proved again to be incredible hosts.  We cannot thank them enough for their generousity and hard work.

We moved our Texas Holdem’ tournament to Friday night at Main Street Lanes and it was extremely well attended.  Julie and Arlene Dahmen were wonderfully generous hosts for the card tournament.   Chuck Fox was our tournament winner.

A special moment at this year’s event was meeting 2 year old Laurel Cooper who was newly diagnosed with Rett Syndrome.  The Cooper family was impressed to see the support our girls receive from the community, and while facing a difficult diagnosis, they know they are not alone in their challenge.   Laurel also inspired her very special preschool teacher, Shauna, to set up her own fundraising page & raise an additional $1,600 for IRSF.

In the 7 years of our event we have given over $105,000 directly to IRSF.   There have been many recent exciting studies leading towards a cure, including one that has reversed the symptoms of Rett Syndrome in mice.  If you would like more information about IRSF, please visit their website at www.rettsyndrome.org.

If you missed this years event & would still like to make a donation, its not too late!  You can make a donation online at http://www.firstgiving.com/spikerett.  If you have any questions regarding our fund raiser or Rett Syndrome, please send us an email at dpbrun@tds.net.

We are looking forward to helping Jessica, Anna and Laurel host the “8th annual Spike Rett’s” volleyball and Texas Holdem’ tournaments on August 5th and 6th, 2011.  Thank you all for your generosity to help fund care for today and a cure for Rett Syndrome tomorrow.  Words really aren’t adequate to describe how grateful we are for your generosity and the continued support we get from our community, friends and family.

“Although the world is full of suffering, it is also full of the overcoming of it”   Helen Keller

Our sincerest thanks!

Doug, Paula, Jessica & Jonah Brunner
